Indie 

Indie music began in the UK with a 1986 NME compilation that featured bands like Primal Scream. CD86 featured 48 tracks 'from the birth of indie pop'. Since then , many 'scenes' have originated like 'madchester' from Manchester.

In the 90's, 'Britpop' developed and this was part of a cultural movement named 'Cool Britannia'.'Grunge' also arrised and was highly inspired by 'The Smiths' in the 80's.

Modern indie is often referred to as 'indie pop' and bands like 'The 1975' have risen to fame and success in recent times. 

Successful modern artists include:

  • Mumford and Sons

  • Arctic Monkeys

  • The Kooks

  • Florence and the Machine

  • The 1975

  • Foster the People
