R&B or Rhythm and Blues is a genre that originated in the 1940's by the African -American community.

The lyrical themes often themed on their quest of pain in the bid for freedom. Its menaing has chopped and changed many times sometimes being seen as blues music and sometimes being seen to fit the rock genre more. In the 80's, 'contemporary rnb' came about with artists like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston becoming popular singer of the genre by the end of the century.
